A renters' policy provides named perils coverage for your clothing, bed, furniture, computers, and other items you own within the walls of your rented space. This means the policy only pays when your property is damaged or destroyed in ways described explicitly in the policy.

These usually include:

  •     Fire or lightning
  •     Windstorm or hail
  •     Explosions
  •     Riots
  •     Aircraft
  •     Vehicles
  •     Smoke
  •     Vandalism or malicious mischief
  •     Theft
  •     Falling objects
  •     Weight of ice, snow, or sleet
  •     Accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam
  •     Freezing

Renter coverage applies to your personal property while inside your rented living and storage spaces. A percentage limit may be placed on property away from home, such as in a car, off-premises storage, or a hotel room. There may be an allowance for coverage while moving your belongings from one rented location to another. Some exclusions may apply. Read your contract carefully.
